KERRVILLE — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets won their American Southwest Conference soccer opener Friday, topping Schreiner by a 1-0 count.
Susana Chavarria scored the game’s only goal on an assist from Shannon Costello in the 76th minute.
Kaitlyn Kelm recorded the shutout in goal for the Lady Jackets (2-3, 1-0) as she recorded six saves.
The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets forced a second overtime against Schreiner, but came out on the short end of a 1-0 decision in their American Southwest Conference soccer opener Friday.
Francisco Medina went the distance in goal for the Yellow Jackets (1-3, 0-1), but Schreiner’s Phillip Anderson snuck in the winning shot in the opening minute of the second extra session.
The Lady Jackets and Jackets were slated to face Texas Lutheran Saturday, but information on those games were unavailable at press time.
HPU will host LeTourneau at 2 p.m. Friday and East Texas Baptist at 2 p.m. Saturday in doubleheaders to open its home conference schedule.
HPU volleyball falls at Hardin-Simmons
ABILENE — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets slipped to 1-2 in American Southwest Conference volleyball action and 3-8 overall with Saturday’s 25-16, 25-20, 25-21 straight-set loss to the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls.
Tamika Heline finished with 10 kills for the Lady Jackets, followed by nine from Amanda Gutierrez, seven from Sydney Bryant, four from Megan Pick, two each from Cathie Kilmartin and Amber Cantu-Curry and one by Kristin Hammond.
Hammond tallied a team-high 14 digs, trailed by 13 from Cantu-Curry, 11 apiece from Heline and Bryant, six each from Gutierrez and Amy Cardwell, two from Jessica Guerra and one by Pick.
Cantu-Curry collected 16 assists, Cardwell added nine and Pick had one.
Kaela Parnell led Hardin-Simmons (5-4, 2-1) with 19 kills, followed by Chelsie Fowler with 12. Fowler also led the Cowgirls with 27 digs, trailed by 20 from Gracen Harris, 15 from Sam Lucien and 14 from Emilee Davis.
Howard Payne will travel to Sul Ross Monday for a 5 p.m. ASC encounter.
