GORMAN — The District 16-A Division II second seed Zephyr Bulldogs withstood a fourth-quarter charge from Lingleville for a 59-58 bi-district victory here Wednesday.
Zephyr (22-9) led 18-12 after one quarter, 30-23 at halftime, 45-35 through three quarters and owned a 12-point lead early in the fourth period.
Lingleville (15-13) drew even with 16 seconds remaining, but turned the ball over on its next possession. Zephyr’s Ryan Martin was then fouled and converted the decisive free throw with three seconds left.
Martin led the Bulldogs with 17 points, trailed by 14 from Haustin Simmons, 12 from Cody Wallin, 10 from Dakota Ellis, four from Dillon Williams and two from Kaiden King.
Zephyr and Throckmorton (14-8) will square off at 7 p.m. Friday in Eastland in the area round of the playoffs.
In other playoff news, the District 16-A Division II champion May Tigers (20-9) will open their postseason run against Highland (11-6) — a 39-33 winner over Woodson Wednesday night — at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Coleman.
The No. 16 Richland Springs Coyotes (20-1), the District 29-A Division II?champs, will also start playoff action Friday when they face McMullen County at 6:30 p.m. in Comfort.
