Pitcher Shelby Miller and first baseman Parker Taylor, senior members of the Brownwood Lions Region I-3A finalist baseball team, were recently selected first-team Class 3A all-state by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Miller was drafted 19th overall by the St. Louis Cardinals in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on June 9, while Taylor is headed to the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff to continue his football career.

Miller, who also was named the Gatorade Texas High School Baseball Player of the Year as well as being voted District 2-3A MVP, finished with a 10-2 record, 1.98 ERA, 153 strikeouts, 38 hits, 39 walks and 22 runs allowed in 77 innings. He also batted .430 for the season with a team-high five home runs and 37 RBIs.

“It was unbelievable to be able to coach a guy with talent like Shelby’s,” said Lions head baseball coach Scotty Nichols after Miller was drafted. “It’s probably a once in a lifetime kind of deal. It’s been an awesome ride and we appreciate everything he’s done for us here at Brownwood. We look forward to great things from him in the future and a great career in the Major Leagues. We’re extremely excited for him.”

Miller — who has also signed a national letter of intent to play baseball at Texas A&M — has yet to sign a professional contract with the Cardinals, but is still expected to do so.

Taylor, the cleanup batter in the Lions’ order, was selected the 2-3A Offensive Player of the Year after batting a team-high .431 with 25 RBIs, seven doubles, 28 hits and 11 runs scored.

“Parker was no doubt one of our biggest emotional leaders,” Nichols said. “He’s one of the greatest first baseman I’ve been around. He led the team in batting average, always hit the ball and always got on base. He’s tall and lanky, and that helped out defensively and helped him dig a lot of balls. He also made some of our defensive calls. I’m really proud of him for making all-state.”

Both Miller and Taylor received all-state status in other sports during their senior campaign.

Miller was selected as a second-team all-state tight end (45-864-9 TDs) and punter (41.3 yards per punt) by the Texas Sportswriters Association in football, as well as being a third-team all-state punter according to TexasPrepInsider.com.

Taylor was a TexasPrepInsider.com first-team all-state selection at wide receiver (50-990-12 TDs) as well as an Associated Press and Texas Sportswriters Association honorable mention all-state choice in football. Taylor set three Lion receiving records — longest touchdown reception (92 yards), most yards receiving in a game (295) and most career receiving yards (1,486).

In basketball, Taylor (14.7 ppg, 10.2 rpg) was the District 2-3A co-MVP and a Texas Association of Basketball Coaches all-region selection.
