LINDALE — After rolling through the TTAS Junior Girls state tournament field undefeated, the Early Purple suffered its first two losses Friday and finished second overall.

Rusk defeated Early 16-4 in the first championship game, then followed with an 8-0 victory to snatch the state title.

Early picked up a 3-2, nine-inning victory over Rusk to open play in the 14-team tournament on Monday.

The Purple followed with a 3-0 nine-inning victory over Troup, an 11-1 decision over Winnsboro and a 2-1 triumph over West to qualify for the state championship game.

Early rallied from a tournament-opening loss to capture the District 2 Junior Girls title and earn its spot at state.

Wild Thangz finish

WEST — The Brownwood Wild Thangz earned third place in the 16-team TTAS Freshman Girls state tournament Friday night as Valley Mills advanced to face Rusk in the championship game.

The Wild Thangz opened the tournament with three straight wins over Lexington (5-3), Rogers (5-4) and Comanche (7-2), but suffered a 12-0 loss to Rusk which forced them into Friday’s tournament championship play-in game against Valley Mills.

The Wild Thangz won the District 2 Freshman Girls championship to reach state.
