COLLEGE STATION — Joan Burks won the girls ‘A’ singles draw to highlight Brownwood High School’s participation at the Bryan-College Station Invitational over the weekend.
After receiving a first-round bye, Burks recorded victories of 6-3, 6-1 over Ellie Day of Houston Westside in the quarterfinals; 6-2, 6-3 over Makenna Parker of Austin Bowie in the semifinals; and 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 over Austin Bowie’s Paige Johnson in the championship match.
Shasta Pruett came in third in girls ‘B’ singles. Pruett defeated Kellie Currie of Houston Westside, 6-4, 6-0 in the third-place match.
For the boys, Mark Johnson tallied a third-place finish in ‘A’ singles as he defeated Jacob Atkins of Jacksonville, 7-5, 6-1 in his final match.
Julia Arledge and Ilse Rincon teamed up to win the girls ‘A’ doubles consolation bracket with a victory of 6-0, 6-2 over a team from Jacksonville in the final.
Also, Joaquin Alonzo and Stephanie Thompson advanced to the consolation finals of the mixed doubles bracket.
In girls ‘B’ doubles competition, the team of Krystal Garcia and Emily Harding also reached the consolation final of their draw.
In other action, Kye Baugh won the fifth-place match in the boys ‘B’ singles bracket, while Darren Ridley and Andrew Harding placed sixth in the boys ‘A’ doubles draw.
Brownwood will compete in the Abilene Invitational Friday and Saturday.
