LAMPASAS — The Brownwood Lady Lions appeared on the verge of putting this past weekend’s struggles at the Justin Northwest tournament behind them, but were unable to hold off the Lampasas Lady Badgers in a five-set non-district battle Tuesday night.

The Lady Lions jumped out to a two-set lead thanks to wins of 25-16 and 25-18, only to witness Lampasas rally with victories of 25-21, 25-14 and 19-17 to snatch the win.

“We came out playing great,” said Lady Lions’ first-year head coach Jackie Lang. “We’ll continue to work on serve receive, blocking and coverage.”

Against Lampasas, Shelbie Harry collected a team-high 17 kills for Brownwood, followed by 15 from Kelsey Gober, eight from Alicia Castillo, two each from Sarah Underwood and Melissa Rmeili and one kill by Katie Pevehouse.

Mallorie Maxwell finished with a team-best 20 digs, followed by 15 from Castillo, 12 from Underwood, 11 from Gober, 10 from Rmeili and seven from Emily Moore.

Underwood’s 23 assists led all Lady Lions, with Rmeili chipping in 14 and Castillo and Harry contributing one apiece.

Tuesday’s loss was the seventh in a row for the Lady Lions (4-13), who will take part in the Seminole tournament this weekend, facing Andrews at 10 a.m. Friday in a warm-up game. Bracket play will then follow as the Lady Lions will open against either El Paso High or Midland Greenwood — depending on the result of the Andrews match — and continue through Saturday.

Brownwood’s next home game is slated for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31 when Class 5A San Angelo Central visits.
