Daniel Lee McKissack

It is with a deep sense of loss that the McKissack family commemorate the untimely passing of Daniel Lee McKissack, an amazingly compassionate and kindhearted man. A friend summarized Daniel’s life by saying: “Daniel never asked for a handout, and he never puts anyone out. He found joy in, and always looked out for ways to serve others. I would be delighted to have Daniel as a next-door neighbor!”

Daniel suffered many injustices; but amidst all he endured, he cared deeply for his family and friends. He was unpretentious and trustworthy in his interactions. He possessed a heart of gold, and willingly helped anyone in need with their landscape, their home and vehicle maintenance; and expected nothing in return. Daniel had a genuine love for dogs, going the extra mile to ensure their wellbeing. He was passionate about antique vehicles, and he never passed up a Buc-ee’s during his travels. He was an industrious worker, a generous soul, and a true friend.

On Saturday, June 04, 2022, Daniel Lee McKissack broke through the limitations of this world to embark on his long-awaited journey home. What others saw as an accident was nothing less than Daniel’s transition into his eternal reward and destiny.

Daniel Lee McKissack was born on Wednesday, March 17, 1971, to Robert and Susan McKissack in Stanford, TX. He attended Brownwood High School, but completed his GED in Houston, TX. Daniel had a desire to strengthen his relationship with God and sought out spiritual mentors wherever he lived. Pastor John Villarreal of Milton Baptist became his first spiritual mentor, to whom Daniel remained accountable these past eight years. Milton Baptist was Daniel’s home church which he attended when in Brownwood, TX. The late Rabbi Pratt of Beth Yeshua Ha Mashiach, in Houston, TX, introduced and discipled him in the Messianic faith. Bro. Dan Boron (Elder) of Eitz Chaim Congregation in Plano, TX, took him under his wings, and continued to build on Daniel’s Messianic foundation. Bro. Dan welcomed him in his heart and home and became one of Daniel’s greatest advocates. Daniel was involved with a nursing home ministry under the leadership of Bro. Dan. He enjoyed helping and ministering to the residents and has never been seen looking unkindly at the people he served. Daniel also served as a guest speaker at a weekend prison ministry outreach at the Middleton Unit, bringing a message of hope to approximately 800 inmates, and interacted well individually with them. He possessed the rear quality of being faithful to his commitment in ministry.

Daniel was skilled in various crafts including auto mechanic, roofing, landscaping, welding, carpentry, and plumbing, and he pursued construction as his chosen field. He worked in Dallas, Houston, and Brownwood, TX where he proved himself a person with strong work ethics. Daniel was employed at Liddell Industries in Brownwood, TX. The family extend their profound appreciation to Liddell for their support during this difficult time.

Daniel was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee McKissack, Sr.; his maternal grandparents Floyd McDaniel, Glenna McDaniel-Barnett, and Clarence Barnett; his paternal grandmother, Zoella McKissack; his uncle, David McDaniel, and his great-nephew, Jaxon Hoedebeck.

Daniel is survived by his loving and cherished mother, Susan McKissack of Brookesmith, TX, whom he says will always be the number one person in his life. He would do his best to make her life easier in any way that he could. Along with his mother in Brookesmith, TX is his older sister, Frances McKissack and his only brother, Robert McKissack, Jr. His younger sister, Nancy McKissack resides in Ebro, FL. Daniel loved his siblings very much and always spoke kindly of them. He left behind his beloved nephews, Dwight (Charity) Hoedebeck of Midland, TX; Scott (Sylvia) Hoedebeck of Brownwood, TX; Mi’Kel and Davion Cade of Ebro, FL, and Izack McKissack of Brownwood, TX. Daniel is also survived by his great-niece MyKah, and his great-nephews Noah and Lincoln. Daniel also left behind his precious Aunt Marie of Mineral Wells, and a host of cousins and friends.

Daniel is deeply missed by his second mother, Leanna McLeggan of Sebring, FL. Daniel proved himself a loving and caring son, who always goes the extra mile when dealing with her and the family. A deep sense of emptiness is left in the heart of his best friend and the love of his life, Helen “Sunshine” McLeggan of Sebring, FL, along with her entire family, including the Verdejo, Grant, Marsden, and a host of others who took him in their hearts, and whose lives are forever imprinted with the love and dedication of Daniel. Daniel is truly an unforgettable man who will forever remain in our hearts.

CELEBRATING DANIEL The McKissack family has chosen to honor the life and memory of their beloved Daniel by celebrating his life on the family estate.
