WACO — All six girls basketball teams in District 16-4A are still alive in the postseason chase with just two games remaining, but the Brownwood Lady Lions missed a chance to improve their positioning with a 52-41 loss at University Tuesday night.
University (12-18, 3-5), which avenged its 61-58 loss in Brownwood on Jan. 12, remained tied for third-place in the district with Killeen (15-15, 3-5), a 59-39 winner over Waco High (10-20, 2-6) Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Lady Lions (12-16, 2-6) fell into a fifth-place tie with only one home game against Waco High at 7 p.m. on Friday and a trip to Midway on Tuesday left on their schedule.
The Lady Lions trailed by as many as eight points, but pulled even at 33-all by the end of the third period. University, however, outscored Brownwood 19-8 in the final eight minutes.
Jensen Knickerbocker scored a team-high 16 points for the Lady Lions, followed by 12 points from LaCresha Williams, 11 points from Katie Chastain and two points from Alex Williams.
Martene Castaneda led University with 20 points, while Kavetta Williams chipped in with 13.
Early 50, Coleman 36
EARLY — The Early Longhorns picked up their eighth District 6-2A victory in 10 league games with Tuesday’s 50-36 win over Coleman.
Early (14-4, 8-2) received 16 points from Clayton Skeen, eight from Eric Skaggs, six from Addison Ebarb, five each from Taylor Singleton and Michael Kramer, four from Austin Cochran and three points each from Evin Hall and Sean Aly.
The Longhorns host San Saba Friday.
Bangs 42, San Saba 34
SAN SABA — The Bangs Dragons followed their upset of District 6-2A leader Jim Ned with a hard-fought 42-34 win at San Saba Tuesday.
The Dragons (16-9, 6-4) trailed 11-9 after one quarter, rallied to take a 24-22 halftime lead and owned a 32-28 edge after three quarters.
Adrian Brown scored 18 points to lead Bangs, followed by eight points from Ryan Haehn, seven from Bradley Lee, three from Jason James and two points each from Justin Greenhaw, Joey Lewis and Dustin McClure.
Bangs will visit Grape Creek Friday night.
