Funeral services for Ona Louise Winn Burns, 99, of Brownwood and Midland will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, in the Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Heflin Cemetery.

Ona died Oct. 13, 2007, at Manor Park in Midland just two days before her 100th birthday celebration. Mrs. Burns was born Oct. 15, 1907, in Flynn, Texas, to Mary Etta Rowland Winn and Thomas Limenton Winn. She was a graduate of Brownwood High School and Howard Payne College. She began playing the piano at the age of 6 and played with passion and joy until she was 99. Her fondest possession was a grand piano in her apartment at Trinity Towers and Manor Park, which she played every day. She married George Pierce Burns in 1928 and they were married 56 years. Her life revolved around her family and her music.

She was a devoted member of the Coggin Avenue Baptist Church in Brownwood and also the First Baptist Church in Blanket, Texas, where she played the piano for many years. She taught school in Weedon, Comanche and Blanket. In the 1950s she began teaching piano exclusively in Brownwood and later taught classes at Midland College.

Ona was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Paul Winn of Brownwood, her husband George, an infant son Daniel Winn Burns, a granddaughter Shelly Elizabeth Burns and a great-grandson Sam Spellings.

She is survived by four children, Pierce Burns and his wife Reba, Dr. Paul Burns and his wife Toni, all of Austin, Mary Margaret Byrom and Bill Burns of Midland; seven grandchildren, Pierce Burns Jr. and his wife Beth, Todd Burns and his wife Liz, Margaret Spellings and her husband Jaime, Laura Arnold and her husband Russell, Robin Fox, Paul Byrom and his wife Sheri and Marietta Metcalfe and her husband Albert; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She will be remembered as a joyful and spirited woman, for her tender care and devotion to her son Billy, for her wisdom and endurance in the face of hardship and tragedy, and as a loving mother and grandmother.
