ALBANY — The Bangs Lady Dragons rebounded from a season-opening loss to Miles Tuesday with three victories at the Albany volleyball tournament on Thursday.
Bangs knocked off San Angelo Cornerstone (25-20, 25-10), Albany (19-25, 27-25, 28-26) and Hawley (23-25, 25-16, 25-19). The Lady Dragons (3-1) will return to Albany at 10 a.m. Saturday to begin bracket play against an unknown foe.
After dropping the first set against Albany, the Lady Dragons clawed their way from behind in both the second and third sets.
“I couldn’t have asked the girls to play any harder than they did,” said first-year Bangs head coach Colleen Westfall. “They were down in all three games and came back to win the last two. They showed they’re going to be a tough group to play and the bench did a great job of stepping up when they were needed.”
The offense was sparked by nine kills from Jaylee Roberts, followed by seven from Rikki Loman, three from Kinsie Ward, two each from Kady Kyle and Kassidy Adams and one kill apiece by Kylie Allen and Mercedes Hinze.
Ward finished with a team-high 11 digs while Allen chipped in nine, Roberts tallied seven, Cheyenne Lovelady collected five and Loman and Brianna Sosa notched one each.
Ward also served a pair of aces while Kyle added one.
In the Lady Dragons’ sweep over Cornerstone, Loman and Ward led the attack with five kills each, while Ward, Allen and Lovelady each served three aces.
In the final match of the day, Bangs again rallied from a 1-0 hole to knock off Hawley. Stats from that match were not available at press time.
“The girls were exhausted after playing a hard-fought match against Albany, but they did a great job of pushing until the end,” Westfall said.
