ABILENE — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets slipped to 0-2 in American Southwest Conference volleyball action and 4-6 on the season with Tuesday night’s 25-14, 25-19, 25-21 loss to the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls.

For Howard Payne, Sarah Bishop led the attack with 11 kills followed by four from Hannah Hicks, three each from Harli Benham and Taylor Jordan, two apiece from Sarah Davies and Carlee Ammons and one by Allyson Reed.

Jessica Guerra dished out 10 assists trailed by nine from Reed, four from Shelby Bridges and one apiece from Hicks and Bishop.

The Lady Jackets’ three service aces were collected by Bishop, Jordan and Bridges.

Defensively, Bridges notched a team-high 18 digs followed by 14 from Jordan, seven from Reed, six from Guerra, two each from Hicks and Bishop and one apiece by Benham, Davies, Ammons and Tate Sullivan.

The Lady Jackets tallied six blocks with three from Hicks, two from Bishop and one from Benham.

Hardin-Simmons (6-3, 1-0) received 13 kills from Madison Reyes, 12 from Christine Sas, eight from Morgan Watts, five from Tori Martinez, two from Belle Shaver and one each from Molli Owen, Ellen Dees, Hannah Hornsby and Reagan Davis.

Owen distributed 16 assists, while Meghan Molitor chipped in 11. Watts recorded four of HSU’s seven aces, with Sas, Owen and Ashley Babineaux adding the others.

Defensively, Babineaux finished with 17 digs followed by 14 from Shaver, nine from Reyes and eight from Owen.

Watts, Shaver, Martinez and Reyes were credited with blocks.

Since opening the season with three wins in four matches at the North Park University tournament in Chicago, the Lady Jackets have won just once in their last six matches — that being a straight-set victory over Rhodes College during the Austin College tournament last weekend.

The Lady Jackets have two more ASC road matches slated for this week as they visit Sul Ross at 5 p.m. Friday, followed by a 2 p.m. Saturday encounter with Schreiner.

HPU opens its home slate Sept. 18 against Concordia.
