A fire late Sunday afternoon destroyed the Lake Brownwood-area mobile home of Chris Greene and Michelle Moreno and their five children.

No one was injured in the 5:30 p.m. blaze.

Fire departments from Brownwood, Bangs and the Bridge responded to the fire on Neal Drive, a narrow road near the intersection of Highway 279 and County Road 551, near Corina's Restaurant.

The family's home actually consisted of a pair of single-wide mobile homes that were joined together. Greene owned the property, and the family had no insurance, Fire Marshal Buddy Preston said.

The Red Cross was preparing to assist the family Sunday evening, Preston said.

Preston said at the scene that he did not know the cause or the origin of the fire. Later Sunday, Preston said by phone that the fire started near an electric heater in the living room, but he still did not know the cause. Preston said the heater's wiring was good and said one of the family's pets might have knocked the heater over.

No one was home when the fire began, Preston said.

"I've never lost everything before," Moreno said tearfully.

The family had an emotional moment when a firefighter found one of the family's pets, a small dog named Trevor, who was hiding, unharmed, in the ruined interior. Family members held the trembling, shivering dog after they were reunited with the pet.

Greene said all of the family's pets had been accounted for except for a snake.
