An extensive ground and aerial search is under way in the Brookesmith area for an elderly woman who walked away from her home Sunday night and is lost, Sheriff's Capt. Tony Aaron said in a text to the Bulletin at 4:10 p.m. Monday.

A helicopter has been flying in the area but had to divert to the Brownwood airport to refuel around 4 p.m., radio conversations on the scanner indicated. The helicopter was expected back in the area after getting fuel.

In addition to sheriff's deputies and investigators, volunteer firefighters are searching, and Parks and Wildlife personnel are searching on four-wheelers, Aaron texted.

Dispatch is on the phone with the woman but she is confused and having trouble communicating her location, Aaron said by text.
