This time last week, the Howard Payne Lady Jackets were in the driver’s seat for their first American Southwest Conference volleyball tournament appearance since 2000.
In the midst of a four-game slide with four matches remaining, the Lady Jackets (9-13, 4-8) trail third-place Concordia (10-13, 5-7) and fourth-place Schreiner (8-11, 4-6) in the race for the final berth from the ASC West Division in the six-team championship tournament, slated for Nov. 1-3 at the site of the West champion.
At 7 p.m. Tuesday, HPU will attempt to pull off the biggest upset of the ASC West campaign as the first-place Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls (17-3, 11-0) visit the Brownwood Coliseum. The Cowgirls have won 13 straight.
Following tonight’s match, Howard Payne will conclude the regular season against Schreiner on Thursday, second-place Texas Lutheran (12-10, 9-3) on Oct. 23 and last-place Sul Ross (1-15, 0-11) on Oct. 26 — all at home.
Meanwhile, Concordia’s closing schedule features dates against Texas Lutheran Tuesday, Hardin-Simmons on Oct. 16, Schreiner on Oct. 18 and Sul Ross on Oct. 20.
