ABILENE ó The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets were dealt their sixth consecutive American Southwest Conference menís soccer defeat Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys by a 4-2 count.
The Yellow Jackets tumbled to 3-8-1 overall and 1-7 in league play with their latest setback, while Hardin-Simmons improved to 6-6 overall and 4-4 in league play. The game was being made up as it was rained out on its originally scheduled date of Sept. 29.
Howard Payne erased a 2-0 halftime deficit with a pair of second-half goals as David Rucker put the Yellow Jackets on the board with an unassisted goal 15:20 after the break, then Edgar Rodriguez pulled HPU even with 18:14 left on another unassisted goal.
Hardin-Simmons regained a 3-2 lead just 1:58 later as Matt Pitcock scored unassisted, while Zach Johnson tacked on an insurance goal with 11:36 remaining, following an assist from Brennan Goodman.
The Cowboys built their 2-0 halftime lead with a Pitcock goal, assisted by Tanner Coffin, with 19 minutes left before halftime, then Colyn Moore scored unassisted with 5:35 remaining in the opening half.
Howard Payne fired 13 shots with eight on goal, while Hardin-Simmons attempted 29 with 12 on goal.
Ryan Young tallied eight saves in goal for the Yellow Jackets, while Sam Potter was credited with six saves for the Cowboys.
The Yellow Jackets, who have four conference games remaining, host LeTourneau at 3 p.m. Friday and UT-Tyler at 3 p.m. Saturday in their final two home matches of the season.
