KERRVILLE — Facing a must-win situation to keep their faint American Southwest Conference tournament hopes alive, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets recorded a clutch 88-84 double-overtime victory over Schreiner Saturday.
With the win — which snapped a five-game skid — the Yellow Jackets (6-15, 4-11) moved within 3.5 games of Schreiner (11-11, 8-8) for the fourth seed from the West Division in the ASC championship tournament. HPU, however, has only four games remaining on its ASC slate.
Tied at 82 in the second overtime, Brandon Gould buried a three-pointer at the 1:13 mark that put Howard Payne in front for good.
The Yellow Jackets led by as many as 10 points, 60-50, with 7:40 left in the second half, but Schreiner charged back and evened the score at 69 at the end of regulation.
In the first overtime, HPU trailed 75-73 before back-to-back buckets from Gould and Michael Thompson pushed the Yellow Jackets back in front, 77-75. But, once again, Schreiner forced an extra session.
During the first half, the Yellow Jackets trailed by as many as seven points, 19-12, but Travis Taillet sank a three-pointer as the half ended to stake Howard Payne to a 34-32 lead at intermission.
Gould paced HPU with 27 points trailed by 16 from Thompson, a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds from JaKalan Gayden, 12 points from Christian Davis, 11 from Taillet, four from Quelan Lancaster, three from Blake Arbogast and two points from Ross Whittet.
A.J. Myers scored 24 points to lead Schreiner.
The Yellow Jackets will visit Sul Ross (4-17, 3-12) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in another must-win contest.
