BRADY — Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth “Liz” McGowan, 78, of Brady will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at the First United Methodist Church in Brady, with the Rev. Selestor Johnson, the Rev. Phillip Steinbach, and the Rev. M.C. Williams, the Rev. John Hancock, the Rev. Vernon Jones, and the Rev. Ernest Kirk officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 Thursday at Leatherwood Memorial Chapels.

She died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, in Brady.

She was born April 21, 1935, in Brady, to Judge Levy Mayfield and Mary L. (Williams) Mayfield. She was married to Clarence Phillip “Top Cat” McGowan on Dec. 2, 1964, in Brady. She was a cook at Brady Head-start for 20 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her sons, Phillip Peterson and wife Linda of Spring, Mike Peterson and wife Marie of Seagraves, Ronald McGowan and wife LaJuan of Cedar Hill, Clint McGowan and wife Sandy of San Antonio and Eric McGowan of Austin; daughters, Gwendolyn Hines and husband Larry of Houston, Euginia Powell of Sommerville, Vicki Johnson of Brady, Marie Peterson of Pflugerville, Millie Pterson and husband Glen Payne of San Angelo, Ann Davidson of Fort Worth, Cheryl McGowan of Brady, Rhonda McGowan and husband A.J. McCleod of Austin, and Terri Thomas and husband Erin of Austin; brother, Royce Mayfield and wife Felecia of Pearland; sisters, Connie Humphrey and Linda Hall, both of Houston, and Debra Sephus and husband Robert of Brady; 39 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Wanda Peterson; and brother, Travis Johnson.
