TYLER — Following a 4-0 start in Virginia the weekend prior, the Howard Payne Lady Jackets volleyball team earned three more victories in four matches at the UT-Tyler Invitational this past weekend to push its record to 7-1 on the young season.
Howard Payne collected wins against Jarvis Christian (25-19, 25-12, 25-7), Centenary (25-19, 25-18, 25-18) and Belhaven (25-20, 25-16, 25-20), with its only loss of the weekend — and season, thus far — coming at the hands of Rhodes (25-14, 25-16, 25-18).
Six of the Lady Jackets' seven victories have come in straight sets, with the other being a five-set triumph over tournament host Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Va. on Aug. 31.
In the victory over Jarvis Christian on Friday, the Lady Jackets received 14 kills from Sarah Bishop, along with eight from Margje Damstra.
Against Centenary Saturday, Bishop again led the way with 10 kills trailed by seven from Damstra. Allison Eaton dished out 19 assists, while Hannah Hartshorn served five aces.
Bishop's 13 kills against Belhaven on Saturday again sparked the Howard Payne offense, as Eaton distributed 19 assists while ASC defensive player of the week Shelby Bridges netted 18 digs.
In the loss the Rhodes on Friday, Bridges finished with 15 digs.
The Lady Jackets are off until Sept. 17 when they open their home schedule against Schreiner at 7 p.m. at the Brownwood Coliseum.
