Trailing 2-0 at halftime of their home opener, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets stormed back with four second-half goals to upend the Schreiner Mountaineers, 4-3, Sunday afternoon.

    The Yellow Jackets (1-3), who opened the season with three losses on the West Coast, were down 3-2 with three minutes remaining before an improbable finish.

    Kevin Ruiz knotted the score at 3 with 2:40 left on an unassisted goal then, with 1:54 left, Eric Young recorded the game-winning goal, his second of the game, with an assist from Shay Pate.

    Schreiner (0-3-1) jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead on a pair of Justin Edwards goals 2:29 and 8:19 into the contest.

    Howard Payne notched its first goal, unassisted by Pate, with 28:30 remaining. Young then found the net for the first time with 23:52 left to even the score at 2-all.

    Schreiner reclaimed a 3-2 advantage with 17:13 to go on Edwards' third goal, but the Mountaineers were unable to hold on to the lead.

    Defensively for the Yellow Jackets, Allan Chehadi played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded four saves.

    Howard Payne finished with 19 shots, including 10 on goal, while Schreiner attempted 11 shots with seven on goal.

    The Yellow Jackets will return to action at 4 p.m. Saturday when they visit Our Lady Of the Lake University in San Antonio.



    The Howard Payne Lady Jackets dominated Schreiner, scoring two goals in each half, en route to a 4-1 victory Sunday in their home opener.

    The Lady Jackets (1-4), who had dropped three games in Oregon and one at Southwestern University to start the season, wasted little time grabbing the lead Sunday.

    Taylor Bicknell scored off a dual assist from Marley Zochert and Elliott Gray to give HPU a 1-0 lead 11:48 into the contest.

    Stephanie Boggs recorded the Lady Jackets' second goal, unassisted, with 8:39 left before halftime, while the HPU defense pitched a first-half shutout.

    Schreiner (0-4) cut the deficit to 2-1 on a Bria Howard goal, assisted by Aryel Kelley, just 2:57 into the second half.

    Zochert answered with a pair of insurance goals with 25:52 and 3:53 remaining to ice the first victory of the season for the Lady Jackets. Hunter Peel and Saphara Zavala teamed up to assist Zochert's final goal.

    Three Lady Jackets shared time in goal as Kelsie Piland, Adrienne Walker and Shelby Spaulding combined to recorded three saves.

    Howard Payne fired 12 shots overall, with six on goal, while Schreiner was limited to five shots with four on goal.

    The Lady Jackets' next game occurs at noon Sunday in Abilene against Chapman University from California.
