A man who fled from police late Wednesday night jumped into the Pecan Bayou and tried to swim to the other side, but turned back to his starting point after being unable to make it to the other side.

Officers took Gregory Hopkins, 33, of Powell, into custody on a charge of evading arrest, police and Brown County Jail records state.

According to a report by Brownwood officer Bruce Spruill:

Spruill was in the 400 block of East Commerce at 11:55 p.m. when he clocked a Chevrolet pickup occupied by three people including Hopkins, who was a passenger, traveling 52 mph in a 35 mph zone. Spruill activated his patrol car's emergency lights, and the pickup turned into the parking lot of the Budget Inn. The pickup continued toward the back of the property at high speed and struck a parked SUV as the pickup came to a stop.

Spruill saw a man who'd been a passenger in the pickup running up the stairs. Spruill ordered the man off the stairs, and the man said he, Hopkins and the man who'd been driving had just left a bar. The man said the driver "ran in the vehicle because they had been drinking," Spruill's report states.

Witnesses said they had just seen two people run toward the front on the motel, and officers Doug Stevens and Kim Holland began checking the area. They were checking the roadside park when they located Hopkins, who jumped into the bayou, Spurill's report states.

Officers were unable to locate the driver, who is the subject of pending charges. Hopkins said the driver didn't jump into the water with him. He said the two had crossed East Commerce together and split up.
