GATESVILLE — A week away from competition, as well as their first match against a District 8-3A opponent, had no effect on the Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions, who cruised to their eighth consecutive victory of the fall tennis season Thursday.
In its first match since Sept. 5, Brownwood crushed Gatesville, 17-2, to improve to 8-0. The Lady Lions and Lions have won all eight of their matches by at least five points, with the majority being double-digit victories.
Against Gatesville, Brownwood swept all nine boys matches, while the Lady Lions dropped only a pair of singles contests.
In doubles action, Lion tandems to notch victories were Mark Johnson and Joaquin Alonzo (8-6 over Brad Krumnow and Holden Randle), Caleb Baccus and Bennie Salazar (8-3 over Michael James and Quentin Hall) and Timothy Sheehan and Casey Shannon (8-0 over Duncan Kleshick and Noah Pratt).
For the Lady Lions, duos landing in the win column were Delaney Bennett and Rosie Cadena (8-5 over Rachael Autrey and McKenzie Grundy), Stephanie Thompson and Brittney Blake (8-4 over Jessica Russell and Katelyn Armas) and Bailey Bishop and Emma Sharpe (8-1 over Katelyn Pelkey and Julianna Owen).
Collecting singles wins for the Lions were Johnson (6-4, 6-1 over Krumnow), Alonzo (6-2, 1-6, 10-6 over Randle), Salazar (6-1, 6-4 over Ira McGough), Matthew Bryant (6-2, 6-3 over James), Sheehan (6-2, 7-5 over Hall) and Stephen Darneal (6-0, 6-4 over Kleshick).
Lady Lions earning singles victories were Thompson (2-6, 6-3, 10-4 over Russell), Blake (6-2, 6-1 over Grundy), Lindsey Williams (6-3, 6-0 over Owen) and Bishop (6-1, 6-1 over Armas).
The mixed doubles match also went in Brownwood’s favor as Bryant and Williams downed the Gatesville team of McGough and Karlee Chastain, 8-6.
Brownwood is slated to visit Killeen Ellison at 9 a.m. Saturday and Copperas Cove at 1 p.m. Saturday — both Class 5A programs.
