EARLY — Few details were available at the scene of a shooting at a residence in the 200 block of Crescent in Early around 5 p.m. Monday.
A man sustained a shotgun wound to the abdomen, and a helicopter was preparing to land at McDonald Field to airlift the man. The person who shot the man was still “on the scene,” Police Chief David Mercer said, declining to elaborate. He said the person who fired the shot and the victim know each other. Mercer said he had no other details to release at that time.
No one was in custody, Mercer said.
Shortly after 9 p.m. Monday, Mercer issued the following press release via email:
“Tonight at approximately 5:20 p.m. Early Police Department officers responded to the 200 block of Crescent Drive in Early, 911 calls reported a shooting with one individual shot.
Officers located a 45-year-old male identified as Nelson Thomas lying on the front porch with a gunshot wound to the stomach. Nelson Thomas was airlifted from the scene to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
Nelson Thomas’ wife, Mica Thomas, was transported from the scene to Brownwood Regional Medical Center for anxiety and assault wounds.
Details are still being gathered but the incident appears to have been a domestic disturbance that ended in the shooting.
No charges have been filed on anyone and no one has been taken into custody at this time. The investigation is continuing. We hope to know more soon.”
Shortly after the incident occurred, Guardian EMS personnel were treating a woman in a yard across the street from the home where the shooting happened. The woman was being treated for an “anxiety attack,” Mercer said, but he declined to point out the person who fired the shot. The woman was placed into an ambulance.
Numerous law enforcement officials from multiple agencies were outside the home. Yellow police tape had been placed around the perimeter of the small wood frame home. The front door was open, and law enforcement officials entered and exited the home.
Law enforcement vehicles and the ambulance were parked along the narrow residential street in front of the home.
