With 10:56 remaining, the Howard Payne Lady Jackets trailed American Southwest Conference front-runner UT-Tyler by a 51-34 count.

When Danyel Bradley sank a running three-pointer at the buzzer, the Lady Jackets had shaved 16 points off the deficit, but were unable to complete the comeback in a 72-71 defeat Saturday afternoon at the Brownwood Coliseum.

“I’m very excited by the way they competed,” said Lady Jackets head coach Meia Daniels. “I was very proud of them.

“We have to play these teams all over again. They’re seeing now if you make one more free throw, one more three-pointer, everything is pretty much even except for the boards. If they can make that one more play, they’re seeing that can be enough to put them ahead.”

The Lady Jackets (6-5, 5-3) shot 39 percent (23 of 59) from the floor, 33 percent (6 of 18) on three-pointers and 83 percent (19 of 23) at the free throw line, but lost the rebounding battle 35-25 as UT-Tyler (10-1, 8-0) grabbed 19 offensive boards.

“The biggest thing was rebounding,” Daniels said. “Most of the time we played good defense and wound up giving up offensive rebounds. We have to make sure we’re grabbing all our boards.”

UT-Tyler nailed 34 percent (23 of 67) of its field goals, 37 percent (7 of 19) of its treys and 91 percent (19 of 21) of its free throws.

Bradley finished with a game-high 29 pints while Britani Gattis surged late and chipped in 17.

“We go back and forth between those two,” Daniels said. “If we can ever get those two to play the same on the same night, we’re going to win a lot of games.”

Yessenia Cazares and Kalin Hanna followed with seven points each, Shardena Hudson added five, Jessica Galaviz chipped in four and Sarah Van Remmen finished with two points.

UT-Tyler received 26 points from Brittany King, 11 from Teylor Seals and 10 from She’Cara Humphrey.

After HPU fell into a 17-point hole, the Lady Jackets immediately responded with nine straight points to close the gap to 51-43 with 9:32 left. Cazares ignited the run with a three-pointer followed by two free throws from Hudson, and a pair of Bradley layups.

HPU was down 10 points, 60-50, with 4:47 left, but four free throws from Bradley and Hanna, followed by a bucket on an offensive putback from Galaviz trimmed UT-Tyler’s lead to 60-56 with 3:03 left.

The Lady Jackets crept within three points, 68-65, on a pair of Gattis free throws with 15 seconds left, then Bradley drained a three to close the gap to 70-68 with six seconds left.

Danai Woods sank two free throws a second later, giving UT-Tyler a two-possession advantage that nullified Bradley’s final trey.
