The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets trailed by 11 points less than six minutes into the game, and 27 points by halftime in an 80-56 home loss to American Southwest Conference rival Mary Hardin-Baylor Thursday night.

The victory was the 700th in the career of Ken DeWeese, head coach of defending national finalist UMHB (9-7, 7-6), which completed a season sweep of the Yellow Jackets (4-12, 4-9). HPU, which hosts Concordia (12-4, 9-4) at 3 p.m. Saturday, slipped to ninth place in the ASC standings.

Howard Payne shot just 31 percent (16 of 52), including 17 percent (3 of 18) on three-pointers, but converted 70 percent (21 of 30) of its free throws. The Yellow Jackets were also outrebounded 54-29.

Brandon Gould finished with 23 points for the Yellow Jackets followed by nine from Jorden Young, six from Quelan Lancaster, five from Ross Whittet, four from Nigele Robertson three from Blake Morrow and two points each from Joshua Cormier and Donovan Jenkins.

UMHB, which converted 44 percent (29 of 66) of its field goals, received a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds from Jerard Graham, 14 points and nine boards from Kevin Waller, 13 points from Russell Green and 11 points and seven boards from James Allen.
