The newly installed turf at Gordon Wood Stadium certainly received the approval of the Brownwood Lady Lions soccer team Friday night.
The Lady Lions needed less than a minute to record their first goal, and racked up five before the first half ended, en route to a 6-0 victory over San Angelo Lake View in the first game at the stadium this season.
Brownwood had been playing its home games at Howard Payne’s Citizens National Bank Field until the installation of the new field turf was completed, which took place earlier this week.
“I was very pleased,” said Lady Lions first-year head coach Keith Robinson. “There was a lot of extra energy. It was the first home start at Gordon Wood, the first home start with the new turf, a lot of firsts tonight and they came out and played very well.”
Kayli Waddle, Tristan Escamilla and Paxton Vaughn recorded two goals apiece for the Lady Lions, while Katelyn Murphy and Lizzie McCrane combined for the shutout in goal.
The Lady Lions (5-2-2) tallied the first goal less than a minute into the contest as Waddle scored following an assist by Escamilla.
“We are notoriously slow starters,” Robinson said. “We usually sit back the first 10 minutes and wait, and wait and wait. I was happy to see us bury one in the first minute of the game.”
Escamilla then scored at 29:51 of the first half with an assist from C.J. Smith, while Vaughn followed with consecutive goals at the 22:57 mark and 21:05 juncture. Escamilla assisted the first and Jeane Standridge’s throw-in contributed directly to the second.
Escamilla scored again with 2:24 left in the opening half, finding the net after collecting the rebound following an Alex Bernal shot attempt.
Waddle added her second goal with 11:38 left in the contest.
“We came out and got the quick goal, then there was a little lull to the game until we started to find our rhythm,” Robinson said. “In the second half we played much better as far as instruction goes in the field. We just couldn’t quite find the last finishing touches in the front third.”
The Lady Lions next play at Abilene Wylie at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
