The Howard Payne Lady Jackets picked up their first victory of the season, splitting a doubleheader with Austin College Sunday at Lady Jacket Field. HPU captured the opener, 3-2, while Austin College regrouped for an 8-0 victory.
In the Lady Jackets’ win, Howard Payne scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to snatch victory away from Austin College (1-2).
With one out in the seventh, Bangs graduate Beth Mullins – pinch-hitting for Kelly Kaake – blasted a solo home run down the left field line off Austin College pitcher Victoria Herrera to knot the score at 1.
Jessica Morales then doubled with two outs, which set the stage for Amanda Gober, who reached on an error that allowed Morales to score the winning run from second base.
Howard Payne grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Larisa Salazar’s two-out RBI single scored Pricilla Patino, who started the inning with a walk.
Austin College took a 2-1 lead on a two-run home run by Haley Clendennen in the top of the fourth, the only runs allowed by Tayler Rushing, who struck out six and allowed five hits in seven innings.
HPU finished with four hits off Herrera – by Mullins, Salazar, Morales and Kodi Glosson.
In the 8-0 loss, the Lady Jackets finished with just five hits and gave up two runs in the first inning and three each in the fifth and seventh innings.
Erin McLead recorded two hits for HPU while Gober, Salazar and Shandi Winstead added one each.
Morgan Ashmore went the distance in the circle for the Lady Jackets, yielding five earned runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts and two walks. The HPU defense committed three errors.
HPU will be back in action on Friday when it hosts LeTourneau in its first American Southwest Conference action of the season.
