Surrendering 19 hits overall and giving up seven runs in one inning, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets dropped their American Southwest Conference series opener to the Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders by a 13-3 count Friday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

The Yellow Jackets (3-2, 0-1) — playing in their first ASC outing of the season — trailed 4-1 heading to the bottom of the third inning, but closed to within 4-3 by the start of the fifth. UMHB (2-0, 1-0) tacked on a single run in the sixth, then exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

HPU’s pitching combination of starter Corey Howie and relievers Mitchell Marquis, Ethan Ferrel, Garrett Virgin and Quinton Poe yielded nine earned runs, walked four batters and hit two more, to go along with the 19 hits.

Chase Burrow went 4-for-6 with a pair of RBIs for UMHB, while Tripp Reeves was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Tyler Taute finished 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Howard Payne, which tallied single runs in the first, third and fourth innings, were led by a 2-for-5 effort from Carlton Brown. Cody Cain finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and Dustin DeJohn and Matthew Daniel also collected one RBI apiece.

Crusader hurlers Ian Ekery, Seth Barrow and Seth Hill combined to toss a three-hitter with three strikeouts and four walks.

The Yellow Jackets will host UMHB for the final two games of their series beginning at noon today.
