STEPHENVILLE — The Brownwood Lady Lions chalked up two victories in three outings during bracket play at the Honeybee Invitational Saturday.

The Lady Lions defeated Big Spring, 6-4, and Tolar, 4-2, before falling to Bowie, 2-0.

Against Big Spring, the Lady Lions relied on a pair of three-run innings to snatch the victory.

Brownwood trailed 2-0 going to the bottom of the third where they grabbed a 3-2 lead, then tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Big Spring cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth, but the Lady Lions held on for the victory.

The Lady Lions chalked up 10 hits, led by two apiece from all-tournament team selection Ashley Gomez — who homered — and Alyson Finnigan. Ashley Jones doubled, while Victoria Sanchez, Kristen Fuentes, Alexis Larrea and Raeann Gongora and Danyelle Gongora each singled.

Gomez and Fuentes both finished with a pair of RBIs, while Finnigan added one as well.

In the circle, Finnigan worked four innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk. Gomez tossed two innings of two-hit ball, yielding one run with two strikeouts and one walk.

In the victory over Tolar, the Lady Lions struck for two runs in the top of the first inning, added their third run in the third and scored once more in the sixth.

Jones finished with two hits and an RBI while Finnigan tripled and drove in two runs. Shelbi Winstead singled and drove in a run, while Gomez, Sanchez and Kayla McFarden notched hits as well.

Gomez went the distance in the circle for Brownwood, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

In Saturday’s finale against Bowie, the Lady Lions owned a 5-4 edge in hits, but couldn’t push a run across the plate.

Bowie scored single runs in the third and fourth innings as Finnigan yielded four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Larrea worked a perfect inning of relief with two strikeouts.

Tori Burkett chalked up two hits for Brownwood, while Gomez and Larrea added one each.

The Lady Lions (4-1) return to action at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when they host Ballinger.
