BELTON — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets suffered a pair of losses Saturday as the Mary Hardin-Baylor Lady Crusaders completed an American Southwest Conference softball sweep.
UMHB tallied a 9-0 win Friday and followed with victories of 2-1 and 4-1 Saturday afternoon.
In Saturday’s first game, UMHB (4-5, 3-3) notched its runs in the bottom of the third and fifth innings, while HPU tallied its lone run in the top of the seventh. The Lady Jackets (2-8, 1-5) outhit UMHB, 6-4.
Halle Sabo, who finished with half of UMHB’s hits, drove in the first run in the third inning, while Victoria Gomez collected the decisive RBI in the fifth.
Shandi Winstead racked up two hits for the Lady Jackets, while Jessica Morales, Amanda Gober, Amanda Cruddas and Tayler Rushing — who drove in HPU’s run — added one hit each.
UMHB hurler Rebekah Ragsdale, who no-hit the Lady Jackets Friday night, struck out 10 and walked one.
In Saturday’s second game, the Lady Jackets surrendered a pair of runs in the first and second innings before tallying their lone run in the top of the third. Pricilla Patino’s RBI single scored Jessica Morales, who reached on a fielder’s choice.
Howard Payne finished with four hits against UMHB pitchers Sabo and Haley Parker, who struck out one and walked one. Cruddas amassed two hits, while Patino and Erin McLeod added one apiece for the Lady Jackets.
Myranda Hinojosa notched two hits and a pair of RBIs for UMHB while Faith Escobar and Corina Drake added one hit and one RBI each.
