Balls were rattling off the fence — and off the scoreboard — Tuesday night as the Brownwood Lady Lions put on a hitting display.

The Lady Lions chalked up a dozen hits — including four for extra bases — and took advantage of a handful of Ballinger miscues en route to a 13-1 victory.

Brownwood (5-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one inning and tacked on another five-spot in the bottom of third.

“They came out on fire,” said Lady Lions first-year coach Jessica Lynn of the offensive performance. “They weren’t just getting little bloop hits, they were getting solid, hard hits. We started hitting better at the (Stephenville) tournament over the weekend and they brought that into this game.”

The Lady Lions capped their five-run first with a mammoth three-run home run by Shelbi Winstead — a line drive blast that deflected off the lettering at the very top of the scoreboard in left field.

“(Assistant) Coach (Roger) Masters has been working with Shelbi,” Lynn said. “She was quick and to the ball. She was killing it yesterday in practice and it carried over into today.”

Winstead finished with a pair of hits and three RBIs, while other offensive standouts included Kristen Fuentes with two hits and a pair of RBIs; Danyelle Gongora and Victoria Sanchez with two hits apiece; Ashley Jones doubled and drove in two runs; Ashley Gomez contributed an RBI double; Tori Burkett and Raeann Gongora collected one hit each; and Alyson Finnigan knocked in a run with an RBI sacrifice fly.

Finnigan — who joined the team during the Stephenville tournament after the completion of basketball season — was also stellar in the circle, scattering three hits over the run-rule shortened five-inning affair with 12 strikeouts and only two walks.

“Alyson wasn’t hitting all of her pitches, but the way she carries herself, she has such a big presence out there and that can be a little bit intimidating,” Lynn said. “She’s only going to get better as the season goes on. She’s still working to get herself into a rhythm.”

Ahead of Winstead’s homer in the first, Finnigan walked and scored on an error and Jones’ RBI sac fly plated Danyelle Gongora.

Danyelle Gongora also scored on a two-out error in the second inning.

During the five-run third, Fuentes drove in two with a triple and Jones added an RBI double. Winstead and Burkett, who both singled, scored earlier on errors.

Brownwood’s two runs in the fourth scored on an RBI double by Gomez and an RBI sac fly from Finnigan.
