A Brownwood man who was working as a UPS driver is free on bond after police arrested him at the United Parcel Service Center Thursday on a warrant for theft of a firearm and on drug charges.
Detectives went to the Custer Road facility to serve a warrant for theft of a firearm on Benjamen Smith, 34, police and rail records state. Smith was arrested on additional charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.
According to a police report:
Detectives went to the service center around 10 a.m. to arrest Smith on the theft warrant. Detectives entered the facility and told Smith he was under arrest but told him he wouldn't be handcuffed until he was escorted to their vehicle.
Smith allegedly tried to abandon a multi-pocked bag and cell phone, saying he did not want to take them. The detectives told Smith the items would be taken into custody because they were in his possession.
As the detectives walked Smith to their vehicle, he allegedly became belligerent, pulled away from a detective and told the detective to take his hands off him, the report states. The detectives called for a patrol officer to transport Smith.
Detectives searched the bag and found several items including a glass pipe with white powder residue which tested positive for methamphetamine. Detectives obtained a search warrant for Smith's residence int he 4400 block of River Oaks Drive, and sheriff's investigator Scott Bird found a canning jar with a "useable amount of marijuana."
