The Brownwood Lady Lions scored in their final at-bat to knock off the Lampasas Lady Badgers in their initial District 8-3A encounter on March 21, and duplicated that feat in the rematch Friday night.
The Lady Lions completed a season sweep of Lampasas and moved into sole possession of second place in district with only two games remaining thanks to a 2-1 victory.
Missing catcher Tori Burkett all game, losing third baseman Ashley Jones to an injury during the contest and with pitcher Alyson Finnigan nursing a sore arm, the Lady Lions (17-7, 5-3) still managed to secure the victory.
“Our girls came out and battled and knew how important this game was since they were tied with (Lampasas),” said Lady Lions head coach Jessica Lynn.
Tied at 1 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, Raeann Gongora, filling in for Jones, was hit by a pitch with one out, then Victoria Sanchez drew a walk. Shelbi Winstead followed with a rocket single — one of just six Brownwood hits against Lampasas (19-6, 4-4) pitcher Sienna Lawson — up the middle that plated Gongora with the go-ahead run.
“Shelbi’s been doing that all year,” Lynn said. “When we need a big hit she seems to always come through. It’s nice to have someone in the seven hole that you can count on to come up with a big hit any time you need one.”
Finnigan, who fanned 17 batters in the first meeting against Lampasas, tossed a five-hitter with 14 strikeouts, one walk and six runners stranded Friday.
In the first inning, Finnigan did not allow a run despite the first two batters reaching. Then in the third inning, she struck out the final three batters after the first three had reached, resulting in Lampasas’s only run.
“Alyson looked like she was struggling a little bit early, but she battled through it like she always does and found a way to get outs,” Lynn said.
Finnigan also drove in Brownwood’s first run in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to center field that scored Gomez, who led off with a single to left. Danyelle Gongora, who was hit by a pitch prior to Finnigan’s at-bat, was tagged out at the plate, limiting the Lady Lions to one run.
