BALLINGER– Five Ballinger High School students achieved great success at the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest, an official UIL event, held Monday, May 26, 2014 at Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville.

The following students received Division I (Superior) Ratings and gold medals: Meredith Gray – alto saxophone solo; Zakkary Ottmers – vocal solo; Jordan Reitmayer – vocal solo.

Students receiving Division II (Excellent) Ratings and silver medals on vocal solos were: Drew Crenshaw, Meredith Gray, James Rouse.

These qualified for state competition by receiving Division I ratings in regional UIL competition in February. Their selections are all from the required Class 1 (high difficulty level) list of the UIL Prescribed Music List and were performed from memory. Meredith Gray qualified in both the instrumental and vocal contests.

The students presented the following selections at State, and also for the musical celebration of Fine Arts Week, held Monday evening, May 19, at the Old Texas Theater, an event that also featured the Ballinger High School Jazz Band and performances by the High School and Junior High Choirs. Selections are listed in the order in which they were presented in the Monday evening concert: Lascia Ch’io Pianga – Handel, by soprano Drew Crenshaw; Ride On, King Jesus – arr. Johnson, sung by tenor Zakkary Ottmers; Bois Epais (Somber Woods) – Lully, interpreted by bass Jordan Reitmayer; Pieta Signore! (O Lord, Have Mercy) – Stradella, performed by soprano Meredith Gray; When I Was a Lad I Served a Term – Gilbert and Sullivan, sung by tenor James Rouse. Ida Lee Ellis played the accompaniments for the vocalists.

Meredith Gray, alto saxophone, accompanied by Matthew Cleveland also performed Alla Gitana – Dukas.

Band director Janet Wilson, assistant band director Matthew Cleveland, choral director Dale Ellis, and choir accompanist Ida Lee Ellis are faculty sponsors for the students. The following sponsors, parents, and family members also attended the contest: Julie Gray, Jamie and Janna Rouse and their daughter Nicole, Eric and Starr Sims, and Mrs. Wilson’s son, Hunter.
