The Brownwood Lions will take their third stab at earning a berth in the 64-team 7-on-7 Division II state tournament Saturday as they compete in the Glen Rose qualifier.

Through two weekends of qualifying tournament action in Brownwood and Gatesville, the Lions have posted a perfect 6-0 pool play record, while twice falling in the semifinals. The Lions dropped a 39-33 overtime decision to Dublin in Brownwood on May 24, then suffered a 42-26 defeat at the hands of Boerne in Gatesville last weekend.

In Brownwood pool play action, the Lions picked up victories over Hamlin (37-20), Snyder (47-14) and Llano (40-0).

At Gatesville last weekend, Brownwood downed Fort Worth All Saints (32-26), Stephenville (45-40) and Comanche (39-27).

Saturday at Glen Rose, the Lions will find themselves in Pool C along with Palmer, Rio Vista and Grandview — all three of which are Class 2A programs. Grandview is the only one of Brownwood’s pool play opponents to reach the playoffs last year, chalking up a 9-3 record en route to winning the District 12-2A Division I title. Palmer also competed in District 12-2A Division I as it posted a 4-6 overall record and 1-5 league mark. Rio Vista finished 1-9 overall and went 0-7 in District 6-2A Division II.

The remainder of the tournament field includes host Glen Rose, Coleman, Mineral Wells and state qualifier Dublin in Pool A; Tolar, Whitney, Eastland and Springtown in Pool B; and Hico, West, Clyde and Godley in Pool D.

Action begins at 9 a.m. as the four pool winners will advance to the semifinals, and the two semifinal victors will clinch state berths.

Forty spots remain in the Division II state tournament, which will be held July 10-11 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station.

The 24 teams who have already qualified are Addison Trinity Christian, Altair Rice, Big Spring, Boerne, Burnet, Celina, Chapel Hill, China Spring, Crockett, Dublin, East Bernard, Fort Bend Christian, Graham, Houston Kinkaid, Kaufman, Lorena, McGregor, Navasota, Pecos, Princeton, Robinson, Rockdale, Sealy and Stephenville.

The Lions are seeking their 15th consecutive trip to the 7-on-7 state tournament. Brownwood won the Division II state championship in 2010.
