The Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Region 8 Track and Field Meet returns to Gordon Wood Stadium Saturday for the first time since 2011.

The Region 8 meet rotates between Brownwood, Abilene and Wichita Falls.

Don Hood, Brownwood High track and field coach and organizer of the TAAF event, expects in the neighborhood of 300 kids to compete in Saturday's event — including nearly 100 from Brownwood.

“There’s a bunch of kids coming, but we’re about a third of it,” Hood said. “What I like about this is you get to see the future of track and field in this area, and there are some pretty exciting kids to watch.”

The meet is divided into age groups from 8U through high school.

“The youngest kids we’ll have are probably 5 and 6 years old,” Hood said.

Modified events exist for the younger competitors, such as the 50-meter dash and the 80-meter hurdles.

Hood stated an Abilene youngster who is threatening to set a national record for his age in both the 400 and 800 meters is scheduling to compete.

The top three finishers in each event advance to the TAAF Games of Texas in College Station July 31-Aug. 4.

Saturday's meet will consist of all traditional events except the pole vault. The field events begin at 9 a.m. with the running finals slated to start at 11 a.m. Hood stated he expected the meet to be completed before 3 p.m.
