KILLEEN The Brownwood High tennis team chalked up its first victory of the fall season Monday, knocking off Class 6A Killeen Shoemaker by a 16-1 count.
The Lions and Lady Lions opened their season this past Thursday with losses at Killeen Ellison and Harker Heights, also 6A programs, but Brownwood head coach Mark Davis was pleased with the adjustments he saw from the team against Shoemaker.
We played a little better than last week, Davis said. We had improvement in some of the areas that needed it. If we can continue to make this kind of improvement each week, we will be in better shape going into district play.
The Lady Lions posted an undefeated mark in both singles and doubles competition.
Chalking up singles wins on the girls side were Delaney Bennett (6-4, 6-3 over Allyssa Bourdon), Brittney Blake (6-0, 6-4 over Kyla Haley-Jones), Bailey Bishop (6-4, 6-1 over Jennyfer Arriaza), Emma Thompson (7-5, 6-4 over Karenina Pelias), Katherine Bautista (6-1, 4-6, 10-3 over Daesia Nisbett) and Kendra Renfroe (8-6 over Mackenzie Leise).
Doubles victories belonged to the tandems of Bennett and Blake (6-0, 6-0 over Haley-Jones and Nunez), Bishop and Emma Sharpe (4-6, 6-4, 10-8 over Pelias and Nisbett) and Thompson and Arliss Lewis (4-6, 6-3, 10-8 over Arriaza and Tierra Jones).
The Lions also put forth an impressive effort, dropping just one match.
Notching singles wins were Bennie Salazar (3-6, 6-4, 10-8 over Armando Haynes), Casey Shannon (6-3, 6-1 over Timothy Salas), Zach Hall (6-0, 6-2 over Terrence Tyson), Kaden Thompson (6-1, 6-2 over Maurice White) and Nate Bryant (6-1, 6-1 over Morgan Wester).
