ABILENE — Playing against a Class 4A opponent for the first time this season, the Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions were dominant on the tennis court, rolling to a 17-2 victory over Big Spring Wednesday at Abilene Cooper High School.
Since opening the season with losses against Class 6A programs Killeen Ellison and Harker Heights, Brownwood has rebounded with an 18-1 triumph over Killeen Shoemaker and Wednesday’s win to even its record at 2-2.
“We are happy with the progress in today’s match,” said Brownwood tennis head coach Mark Davis. “In the singles, we stepped it up and played much better. Even though we won all the doubles matches, we still struggled in some of the same areas we have been having trouble.”
Brownwood swept all seven doubles matches — three each on the boys and girls sides and one in mixed competition.
Claiming victories for the Lions were the tandems of Bennie Salazar and Zach Hall (6-0, 6-4 over Tristian Turner and Josh Baker), Casey Shannon and Matt Thompson (7-5, 6-0 over Will Grigg and Kiern Atherton) and Nate Bryant and Jeremy Roberson (6-3, 6-3 over Brandon Hilario and Noe Arguello).
Tallying wins for the Lady Lions were the teams of Delaney Bennett and Rosie Cadena (7-5, 6-2 over Cassidi Redlin and Sarah Marshall), Bailey Bishop and Brittney Blake (5-7, 6-1, 10-7 over Morgan Parnell and Taylor Alevo) and Karina Garcia and Emma Sharpe (6-3, 6-2 over Alex Salazar and Braylee Cantu).
Earning the mixed doubles win was Kaden Thompson and Katherine Bautista by a 6-1, 6-1 count.
Both the Lions and Lady Lions recorded five singles victories apiece.
On the girls side, wins belonged to Cadena (6-3, 6-4 over Redlin), Blake (7-5, 6-1 over Marshall), Bishop (6-4, 6-1 over Alevo), Sharpe (6-0, 6-0 over Brehm) and Garcia (6-3 6-0 over Cantu).
Chalking up boys singles victories were Salazar (6-2, 6-2 over Baker), Shannon (6-4, 6-3 over Atherton), Hall (6-0, 6-1 over Turner), Kaden Thompson (5-7, 6-4, 10-7 over Grigg) and Matt Thompson (4-6, 7-5, 12-10 over Hilario).
