The Howard Payne Lady Jackets’ bid for a victory in their home opener was denied by Austin College Saturday afternoon, as interim head coach Ben Bishop’s squad was blanked, 1-0, at Citizens National Bank Field.

With 61 seconds remaining in regulation, Austin College recorded the lone goal as Mandi Sherwood scored in the box with an assist from Tyler Marquez.

Howard Payne goal keeper Kelsie Piland finished with one save as Austin College attempted only four shots all day, with two on goal — one by Sherwood and one by Marquez.

Meanwhile, the Lady Jackets took 15 shots, including seven on goal, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Austin College goal keeper Franchesa Lozoya recorded seven saves.

Firing shots on goal for the Lady Jackets were Marlene Gillespie with a team-high three, trailed by one apiece from Marley Zochert, Taylor Bicknell, Brittany Davis and Courtney Turner.

The Lady Jackets (0-2), who are coming off a 4-12-1 campaign in 2013, will continue their quest for their first win of the season — and Bishop’s first victory as head coach — at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Thomas-Houston.

SEGUIN — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets are still searching for their first victory — and first goal — of the 2014 campaign after suffering a 3-0 non-conference loss to Texas Lutheran Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets, in their second season under head coach Estevan Arbaiza, dropped their season opener Friday at Schreiner, 2-0.

Howard Payne surrendered a pair of goals in the first half and one more in the second.

Isaac Lopez put Texas Lutheran on the board 11:03 into the contest with an assist from David Ching. With 5:43 left in the first half, Tim Shaffer added the second goal with an assist from Victor Manzaba.

Just 70 seconds into the second half, Lopez assisted Alejandro Martinez with the final goal of the day.

Texas Lutheran took 23 shots, including 13 on goal, as HPU goal keeper Brice Gardner chalked up 10 saves.

The Yellow Jackets attempted only seven shots, with four on goal — two by Alex Sanchez and one apiece from Daniel Torres and Robert Cantu.

Howard Payne, looking to improve on last season’s 1-17 overall mark and 0-10 record in American Southwest Conference action, will open league play at 4 p.m. Friday at Louisiana College.
