MINERAL WELLS After collecting five victories in their last six matches, the Brownwood High tennis team was defeated by the slimmest of margins, 10-9, by Iowa Park Saturday in neutral court action.
We had a lot of unforced errors and that made the difference in the match, said Brownwood High tennis coach Mark Davis. On the other hand, we had some great performances by some individuals.
After doubles action, Brownwood trailed 4-3 with victories earned by the boys No. 1 team of Bennie Salazar and Kaden Thompson (8-5 over Dalton Nix and Shawn Wright), the boys No. 2 team of Casey Shannon and Zach Hall (8-2 over Corey Witherspoon and Payton Fisher) and the girls No. 2 team of Brittney Blake and Bailey Bishop (9-8 [7-5] over Andrea Pedon and Kelsey Owen).
The Lady Lions recorded four singles wins as victories belonged to No. 1 Delaney Bennett (6-2, 6-3 over Terrin Murray), No. 2 Rosie Cadena (2-6, 7-6, 7-4 over Kadey Anna Jackson), No. 3 Blake (6-4, 7-5 over Erin Stone) and No. 6 Katherine Bautista (7-6 [11-9], 2-6, 7-5 over Owen).
The Lions added a pair of singles victories, from No. 2 Shannon (6-2, 6-2 over Witherspoon) and No. 3 Hall (7-5, 6-4 over Wright).
Brownwood (5-4) will host Copperas Cove at 4 p.m. Tuesday and Gatesville at 9:30 a.m. Saturday before Mineral Wells visits on Sept. 9 for the District 6-4A opener.
