EARLY — The Early Longhorns didn't let the Christmas break slow their roll Friday as they defeated Zephyr in a back and forth battle.
The Longhorns (7-6) defeated the Bulldogs 46-42 in an overtime thriller. Early trailed for most of the game and even were down by 10 points late in the third quarter, but a 7-0 run got the Longhorns back in the game and ultimately led them to another victory.
Early was led offensively by senior Chris Johnston who racked up 14 points on the day. Also coming up big in the overtime victory was junior Abel Hernandez who also registered 14 points, five of which came in OT.
Zephyr's offensive leaders were sophomore Trent Hallum, who scored 15 points, and junior Kohl Wiedel, who tallied 12.
The loss for Zephyr marked their second this week to Early. They led the Longhorns by 10 points or more in both contests. Early has trailed in their last several games when entering the fourth quarter, but have managed to come out on top, something that head coach Mike Martinez says he likes.
"One thing we've been doing well recently is just finding a way to win," Martinez said. "We've been down going into the fourth quarter in our last few games, including the May tournament, and the kids haven't given up and they've found a way to come back. They just don't give up, and I like that."
Early will take on Ballinger at home next on January 13, while Zephyr will travel to Highland on Tuesday.
