ABILENE — The woes continued for the Howard Payne Lady Jackets Thursday night, as their losing streak reached four games with a 62-56 non-conference loss to the former and future American Southwest Conference rival McMurry Lady War Hawks.
Howard Payne (6-5, 3-3) had dropped consecutive ASC road games at UT-Dallas, UT-Tyler and Ozarks prior to Thursday’s stunner.
The last time the Lady Jackets suffered four straight losses occurred during the 2000-01 season.
McMurry (2-15), meanwhile, put an end to its 14-game losing streak as its only other win came Nov. 19 against Adams State.
Howard Payne led McMurry by as many as nine points, 19-10, in the first half but settled for a 30-24 lead at intermission.
McMurry dominated play in the second half, storming back to grab a 45-44 lead with 9:13 left. The Lady War Hawks’ advantage grew to 59-54 with 2:23 remaining, but Howard Payne had no answer.
HPU shot 36 percent (24 of 66) from the floor, but went to the free throw line just six times, converting three. McMurry hit only 30 percent (18 of 59) of its field goals, but drained 21 of 29 free throws.
Danyel Bradley led HPU with 16 points followed by Yessenia Cazares with nine, Sarah Van Remmen with eight, Jessica Leaks with seven, Kristin Cunningham with six, Jessica Galaviz and Dominique Featherstone with four each and Erionna Brown with two points.
Taylor Russell led McMurry with 20 points, Taylor Boroson added 12 and Haley Welch finished with 11 points.
The Lady Jackets host Louisiana College (7-2, 4-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday in American Southwest Conference action.
