ABILENE — The Brownwood Lions began their second season under head coach Blake Danaher with a tie and a loss Thursday at the West Texas Invitational.
Brownwood suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands Abilene Cooper in the opener, then rallied for a 1-1 tie against District 4-4A foe Abilene Wylie in the nightcap.
Due to the potential for winter weather, Friday’s schedule of games has been cancelled, which resulted in the Lions (0-1-1) playing twice Thursday.
Against Wylie, the Lions yielded a first-half goal and faced a 1-0 deficit at halftime. But Daniel Martinez, the District 34-4A freshman MVP a season ago, put the Lions on the board in the second half to force the deadlock.
In the loss to Cooper, the Lions surrendered the game-winning goal in the final five minutes.
The Lions led 1-0 at halftime with Brownwood’s only goal coming from varsity newcomer Reid Longabaugh, but Cooper controlled the second half.
Brownwood is scheduled to return to action Saturday and will play twice more against yet to be determined opponents.
