The Depot in Brownwood was buzzing Saturday night when Abilene artist Jana Herndon was announced as the winner of the Dorothy Mayes Best of Show Award and a $1,000 cash prize for her piece titled 'Lazy Fall Afternoon'.
According to Herndon, the piece is a micromosaic, an art form that dates back to the Romans. It entails small pieces of glass used to form pictures, a form of artwork used by the Vatican in the 1500's.
The piece took her a year to produce, due to Herndon pulling her own glass.
The 17th annual Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit will officially be open to the public starting today and will continue until February 21.
Those in attendance Saturday night for the opening reception and awards ceremony spoke about the creativity, and individualism that was shown in each piece of artwork. In all, 14 cash prizes were awarded to 14 artists totaling $5,250 .
"There is some fantastic art in this year's exhibit," said local artist and exhibitor Robert Priddy. "It doesn't matter what your taste is, you'll find it here. There's a wide variety of different artists and different kinds of art here. You don't get an opportunity to see this kind of variety of great artwork everyday."
The exhibit is one that is decided by a juror, who this year was Daryl Howard, an experienced and renowned printmaker and mixed media collagist.
"I think that our judge did an excellent job of covering a wide spectrum of medium in this year's exhibit," said Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit volunteer Marla Stanley. "There's collage, photography, acrylics, oil and everything included. It's also not only a wonderful representation of medium, but also a great representation of artists in Central Texas."
