The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets will attempt to snap a three-game losing streak as they host the University of Dallas in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. today at Don Shepard Park.

The Yellow Jackets dropped all three American Southwest Conference contests at Louisiana College Saturday and Sunday to slip to 6-6 on the season and 3-5 in league action — eighth place in the conference standings.

In Saturday doubleheader action, the Yellow Jackets fell 6-4 and 2-1, followed by a 5-1 defeat Sunday.

The Yellow Jackets dropped the series opener as a feverish rally in the final inning came up short. Trailing by a five runs heading into their last at-bat, Howard Payne pushed three runs across the plate in the top of the seventh, but the rally ended with the tying run on second base and the go-ahead run at the plate.

Howard Payne surrendered the first five runs, including four in the bottom of the third inning, but scored a run in the top of the fifth — which Louisiana College answered.

The Yellow Jackets recorded seven hits — two by Connor Roberts and one each from Brandon Garrett, Matthew Daniel, John Elmore, Jacob Cowling and Walker Dailey. Daniel drove in a pair of runs and Dailey added an RBI.

On the mound, Shae Edmonds went the distance for HPU and yielded four earned runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts.

Sully Martin finished with three hits for Louisiana College while Dylan Keller added two hits and a pair of RBIs. Jermaine Liggins also added two hits and drove in a run, while Mark Riendeau and Garret Parsons finished with one hit and one RBI apiece.

In Saturday’s second game, Louisiana College scored twice in the bottom of the second inning, while Howard Payne mustered just one run in the top of the fourth off the Wildcat pitching duo of Bo Ockman and Ron Anders — who tossed a four-hitter with a pair of walks.

Garrett, Daniel, Dailey and Brett Quackenbush recorded hits for the Yellow Jackets, while Quackenbush and Connor Roberts drew walks.

In the HPU fourth, Daniel led off with a single and Quackenbush followed with a walk. Daniel then stole third base, and an errant throw allowed him to race home with the Yellow Jackets’ only run.

Louisiana College’s two runs in the bottom of the second scored on a two-RBI single to right field by Liggins, which plated Garrett Parsons and James Santiago, who also singled.

On the mound for HPU, Jacob Spivey surrendered two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and five walks over seven innings. Shawn Brody pitched a perfect eighth, tallying a pair of strikeouts.

In Sunday’s series finale, the Yellow Jackets spotted Louisiana College the first five runs — two in the first and one each in the second, fifth and sixth innings — before avoiding the shutout in their final trip to the plate.

The Yellow Jackets collected nine hits and four walks against Wildcat pitchers Trey Ducote and Anders, but left 12 runners stranded on base. Garrett chalked up four hits for HPU, Daniel added two and an RBI and Dailey, Elmore and Will Roberts finished with one hit apiece.

Daniel’s two-out RBI single in the ninth brought home Joshua Martinez, who walked to start the frame.

Martin again led Louisiana College with three hits, while Liggins drove in a pair of runs.

Matthew Parks took the loss for the Yellow Jackets, allowing three earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts, one walk and two wild pitches in two innings. Brody worked three innings of relief, yielding two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Zach Moseley pitched the final three innings, giving up two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
