The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets put their three-game losing streak behind them by sweeping the University of Dallas, 6-2 and 8-4, in non-conference baseball doubleheader action Tuesday at Don Shepard Park.

The Yellow Jackets rallied from a 2-0 hole in the first game by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, while tacking on an insurance run in the fifth.

HPU finished with five hits — one each from Micah Thompson, Brandon Garrett, Jake Sadler, Matthew Daniel and Will Roberts. Thompson drove in two runs while Garrett, Roberts, John Elmore and Walker Daily each added one RBI.

On the mound, Dustin Kelver pitched three innings of three-hit ball, surrendering two runs — one earned — with two walks. Chad Anders worked the final four innings to secure the win, giving up just two hits.

In the second game, Howard Payne jumped out to 5-0 lead after two innings and kept Dallas (4-11) at arm’s length the rest of the contest.

HPU’s seven-hit attack included two each from Thompson, Cody Brown and Connor Roberts, along with one from Sadler. Brown’s two RBIs were a team-high, while Thompson, Sadler, Roberts and Jacob Cowling contributed one apiece.

Five Yellow Jackets took the mound with Tyler Colburn earning the win as he worked three innings of two-hit ball, yielding two runs with one strikeout and two walks. Wesley Smith, Nathan Weyrauch, Garret Virgin and Kyle Ramon combined to allow two runs over the final four innings with five strikeouts and one walk.

The Yellow Jackets (8-6, 3-5) will host UT-Dallas in a three-game American Southwest Conference weekend series, beginning with a single game at 2 p.m. Friday.
