LUBBOCK — District 6-4A boys golf champion Michael Hemm improved by three strokes during his second round at the 36-hole Region I-4A tournament Thursday, but that was not enough to secure a state tournament berth.

Hemm followed an opening 77 Wednesday at Shadow Hills Golf Course with a 74 over the final 18 holes as he posted a 151 composite score — five shots off the state qualifying pace and tied with Dante Griner and Joey Kirk of Monahans for 12th.

The top three golfers not associated with the top three teams that earned berths to Austin also advanced to the Class 4A boys golf state tournament, scheduled for April 27-28 at Onion Creek Golf Course.

Representing Region I-4A at state will be the teams of Andrews (584), Monahans (605) and Decatur (606), while individuals clinching berths were Landon Mack (76-70=146) of Andrews II, Seminole’s Luke Wimmer (76-70=146) and 6-4A runner-up Tyler Bilbo (74-72=146) of Abilene Wylie.
