A husband and a wife were indicted on charges of injury to a child and injury to an elderly individual in connection with a disturbance in Zephyr after the homecoming football game.

The April session of the Brown County Grand Jury returned the indictments against Richard Mayes, 38, and Cindy Mayes, also 38, district clerk records state.

According to sheriff's officials:

Deputies responded to a home in the 4100 block of County Road 272 at 9:25 p.m. A man lives there with his wife and 14-year-old stepdaughter. The man told deputies the trouble started when another man — identified as Richard Mayes, who is the biological father of the man's stepdaughter — and Mayes' wife arrived at the County Road 4125 home after the Zephyr homecoming game.

Richard and Cindy Mayes were upset because the teen girl had asked her stepfather, rather than her biological father, to walk with her at the homecoming game, deputies were told. Several people were involved in a fight, and the stepfather told deputies his 78-year-old father, as well as his stepdaughter, had been assaulted.
