SHERMAN — Through three outings, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets have yet to locate the win column as they were dealt a 68-62 non-conference loss Thursday night by the Austin College Kangaroos.

For the third consecutive game, Howard Payne (0-3) was unable to hold on to a second-half lead. In front 25-20 at halftime, the Yellow Jackets yielded 48 second-half points and fell behind for good with 6:58 left.

Howard Payne seized its final lead, 52-51, with 7:21 remaining on a layup by Khyce Randall. The Yellow Jackets then fell victim to a 14-4 run as Austin College (2-0) opened its largest lead of nine points, 65-56, with 1:05 to go.

The Yellow Jackets shot just 29 percent (18 of 62) from the floor, including 30 percent (6 of 20) from beyond the three-point arc. HPU also connected on only 64 percent (20 of 31) of its free throws. The rebounding edge belonged Howard Payne, 48-43, and both teams committed 11 turnovers.

Randall finished with a team-high 23 points for Howard Payne trailed by nine from Volney Willis, eight from Rickey Guillory, six each from J Bailey and Shadd Cole, four apiece from Willie Foreman and Evan Vaden and two points from Curtis Gile.

Austin College connected on 40 percent (23 of 57) of its shots, but just 20 percent (2 of 10) of its treys. The Kangaroos also converted 67 percent (20 of 30) of their free throws.

Brian Baehl paced the attack with 24 points, Stephen Igbinosa chipped in a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds and Alan Sullivan also finished in double figures with 10 points.

Next for the Yellow Jackets is the Colorado College Tip-Off Classic as HPU faces host Colorado College at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27 and Hamline at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28.
