COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets landed in the win column in the finale of the Colorado College Tipoff Classic, defeating Alverno by a 71-37 count Saturday.
Howard Payne opened tournament action Friday with a 63-56 loss at the hands of Benedictine.
In HPU’s victory, the Lady Jackets (1-2) limited Alverno (2-2) to 15 first-half points behind 21 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes, as Howard Payne grabbed a 15-point halftime lead.
For the game, Alverno converted just 24 percent (15 of 61) of its shots, 6 percent (1 of 17) of its three-pointers and 60 percent (6 of 10) of its free throws.
Meanwhile, Howard Payne knocked down 34 percent (28 of 83) of its field goal attempts, 21 percent (7 of 33) of its three-pointers and 67 percent (8 of 12) of its free throws. The Lady Jackets also owned a 56-48 edge in rebounds and forced 25 turnovers, while committing 15.
Presley McKethan recorded a career-high 16 points to pace the HPU offense followed by Micah Cisneroz with 13, Danyel Bradley with 12, Sarahi Castillo with 10, Kristin Cunningham with seven, Yessenia Cazares and Caprica Brooks with three each, Jessica Leaks, Valarie Matlock and Ashley Caldwell with two points apiece and Erionna Brown with one point.
Mollie Mikyska was the only Alverno player to reach double figures as she produced 10 points. Brooke McBain added six points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
In Friday’s loss to Benedictine, Howard Payne trailed 14-12 after one quarter and 27-20 at halftime, but closed the gap to 42-41 after three quarters. The Lady Jackets trailed 45-43 with 9:22 left following a jumper by Bradley, but HPU yielded 11 of the next 13 points and quickly found itself down double figures, 56-45, with 4:50 remaining.
The Lady Jackets shot 32 percent (21 of 65), including 27 percent (6 of 22) on three-pointers, and converted just 50 percent (8 of 16) of their free throws. Howard Payne was also outrebounded, 53-31, but the Lady Jackets forced 24 turnovers while giving the ball away just 13 times.
Bradley led HPU with a double-double of 28 points and 10 rebounds followed by Cazares with 13 points, McKethan with six, Cisneroz with four, Castillo with three and Brown with two.
Benedictine (2-1) knocked down 39 percent (21 of 54) of its field goals and 45 percent (5 of 11) of its treys.
Nicole Botich led the way with 16 points followed by Briana Hamilton with 13 and Shannon Ryan with 10. DeKayla Crayton chipped in six points and a team-best 14 rebounds.
The Lady Jackets are back in action at 6 p.m. Monday at Incarnate Word, then venture to Texas Lutheran for a 6 p.m. Tuesday tilt.
