After facing a pair of stellar passers in their first two playoff games, the Brownwood Lions will attempt to slow down two quarterbacks at once during the third round.

The Lions (10-2) battle Mineral Wells (10-2) at 1 p.m. Friday at Abilene Shotwell’s Stadium in the Class 4A Division I Region I semifinals, and the Rams employ a quarterback rotation that features Trent Guinn and Triston Perry sharing snaps.

Guinn has seen slightly more action is a threat both passing (123 of 179 for 1,612 yards, 18 TDs, 4 INTs) and rushing (773 yards, 8 TDs). Perry is a more traditional quarterback (70 of 129 for 1,202 yards, 20 TDs, 6 INTs; 68 yards rushing, 2 TDs) and led the Rams’ aerial assault in last week’s 41-20 win over Pampa.

Perry completed 8 of 16 passes for 130 yards and four touchdowns while Guinn was 9 of 11 for 84 yards with a scoring toss.

The Rams also feature a 1,000-yard rusher in Johnny Morales (1,236 yards, 14 TDs) and a pair of 50-plus reception receivers — Jordan Duckett (51-992, 13 TDs) and Douglas Stevens (50-799, 13 TDs).

For the season, Mineral Wells averages 38 points and 430 yards — 236 passing and 194 rushing— per game. The Rams generated 417 yards of total offense — 214 through the air and 203 on the ground — a week ago.

Lions head coach Chuck Howard stated the Mineral Wells offensive philosophy mirrors Brownwood’s in some aspects.

“They’ve kind of taken our philosophy in that they want to line up and run the football, but they’ll also take some deep shots,” Howard said. “They’re another spread offense, but it’s a different spread from Graham and Andrews.”

The Lions will counter with a defense that yields just 19 points and 324 yards — 182 through the air and 142 on the ground — per outing, with 20 takeaways. Since the start of district action, however, the Lions are giving up an average of 11 points per game and only Graham has scored more than two touchdowns during the last six outings.

A comprehensive preview on the Brownwood-Mineral Wells matchup will appear in the Sports Blitz in the Thanksgiving Day edition of the Bulletin.
